Firefighters remain at the scene.
The landslide comes after a wild night of weather caused by a southerly that swept up the country, bringing heavy snow, hail and severe gales to some areas.
DOC Spokesperson Andrea Crawford said they'll know more soon.
"Our Fiordland senior ranger is on his way to Milford Sound to investigate the landslide, and we're working with the Milford Development Authority to ascertain the situation."
