The Broadcasting Standards Authority has issued new media guidance for gender identity issues - after an increase in complaints.
It recognises free and frank exchange of opinions is a key element of freedom of expression, but needs to be tempered with limits that protect vulnerable communities.
It also recognises transgender people have the right to protection from discrimination and denigration.
It acknowledges it can harm trans and non-binary people when references to them don't reflect their identity, in names or pronouns.
The Authority says it may decline complaints to it that rely on transphobic stereotypes - and are unlikely to succeed
It says most commonly, these involve the trope that gender identity is a mechanism to exploit women.
