The Government is standing by a $5.5 million funding package to support two major golf tournaments.
$2.7 million is being allocated from the Major Events Fund to the New Zealand Women's Open from 2017 through 2019, while $2.8 million is to go to the New Zealand Golf Open over the same period.
After similar funding packages were announced three years ago, official papers questioned how valuable the spending was for New Zealand, and said it was difficult to attract overseas business interests to the events.
But Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges is backing the decision that has been made.
He said it has been handled by an independent panel that has made the decisions, which has then gone to ministers for oversight.
"I think in this case, this one's pretty clear cut. This is something that gets our profile around the world," he said.
Bridges said the spending will help boost golfing tourism.
"And in addition to that, there's some great business leverage opportunities from the weekend, with a lot of business people flying in from Australia and Asia - Japan in particular."
