The mayor of Whanganui has confidence in Corrections, as Stewart Murray Wilson is released on parole for the second time.

The serial sex offender will live in a house on the grounds of Whanganui Prison, where he'll be subject to GPS monitoring and strict parole conditions.

Whanganui mayor Annette Main says the community is comfortable, as Corrections is closely monitoring him.

She's pointing to what happened when Wilson breached his parole conditions in 2013.

"The department did what they said they were going to do. They said that if he didn't comply with all of the conditions he would be recalled to prison and that's what happened."

Mayor Annette Main believes most of the community is understanding.

"In this case he's not moving into our community per se, he's actually going to be moving into a house on the prison grounds."

Corrections says Whanganui's one of the few places in the country where, as far as it can determine, Wilson has no victims.
