Armed police are stationed outside the Murupara Police Station and at nearby cordons as an “active incident” unfolds.

Police are speaking through a megaphone and appear to be interested in a white ute parked directly outside the station in the small Bay of Plenty town.

Police earlier said Pine Dr was closed between Oregon Dr and Main Rd while police respond to the situation.

“A number of staff are in attendance, including the police negotiation team. We ask the public to steer clear of the area this morning,” police said.

“The scene is currently contained and police are actively engaging with one person.”

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said he could see armed police and the road was cordoned off.
