Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has lambasted irresponsible e-scooter riders, as a new safety campaign is launched.

The "Scoot Safe" education programme aims to educate riders, after the introduction of 1000 scooters in Auckland and Christchurch.

Goff says a 10-kilometre an hour speed limit may need to be imposed.

"It's pretty hard to legislate against idiocy and stupidity, but I've seen a bit of that as well."

Nearly 150 e-scooter injury claims have been lodged with ACC.
