A man has died after threatening police with a samurai sword and biting an officerโ€™s hand before being Tasered, pepper-sprayed and losing consciousness.

Assistant Commissioner Jill Rogers confirmed the manโ€™s death this afternoon.

The man was one of two people taken into custody at ลŒrere Point after earlier fleeing from police in Papakura at 2.15pm.

โ€œTaser, OC spray and a police dog unit had been deployed after the man challenged and threatened officers with a samurai sword and bit an officer,โ€ Rogers said.

After being taken into custody by officers, the man became unresponsive.

โ€œMedical assistance was immediately provided however tragically the man was unable to be revived.

โ€œPolice are working to locate the manโ€™s next of kin, to inform them of the death and ensure appropriate support is in place for them.

โ€œUntil the next of kin notifications have been carried out, further details regarding the deceased will not be provided.โ€

A post-mortem examination would be carried out in the coming days to establish the cause of death. Police would make enquiries on behalf of the coroner.

The matter will also be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) and WorkSafe.

In an earlier statement, police said an officer initially saw the car โ€“ which was being sought as part of an ongoing investigation - in Great South Rd, Papakura at 2.15pm.

Police said the driver failed to stop and was monitored by the Eagle helicopter as it drove to ลŒrere Point, where it came to a stop on the beach about 3.20pm.

The driver of the car was then taken into custody without incident.

โ€œThe passenger of the car challenged police officers, threatening officers with a samurai sword and biting the hand of one officer.

โ€œThat officer has been transported to a medical centre for treatment.

โ€œOfficers deployed Taser, OC spray and a police dog unit, which enabled them to take the man into custody without further injury to officers.

โ€œWhile in officersโ€™ custody at the beach, the man became unresponsive and is currently receiving medical assistance.โ€

Cordons are in place and the public is asked to follow the directions of emergency services staff.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
