Updated 4:07pm:Â It was a delicate task, but Auckland's a step closer in realising its cycle-loop dream today.
The last of seven sections of the Canada Street Bridge has been lifted into place.
The 260 tonne bridge stretches 160 metres from Canada Street to the old Nelson Street off-ramp and is a milestone for phase one of the Nelson Street Cycleway.
Auckland Transport's Brett Gliddon says the steel bridge was built off site in sections then bought in one by one.
"It's been quite tricky because when people get a chance to have a look, it's actually curved and that's quite precise work to lift it into place and make sure all those sections line up and tie together."
Gliddon says when complete, it'll be a star attraction with million-dollar views:
"I think this is going to be the showpiece of the cycle way network for Auckland. Ultimately we'll create a loop around the CBD, just the architectural features make it pretty spectacular."
Skypath's Bevan Woodward says the chain's only as strong as its weakest link:
"At the moment Auckland's walking and cycling network is fragmented but linkages like this, linkages like sea paths which will link seamlessly right through to Takapuna are really important for the network."
Skypath's Bevan Woodward says linking suburbs will create a safer riding environment:
"This is one of many projects that are coming, we have got the connection through to Takapuna via sky paths and then sea paths so it's very cutting times for Auckland."
