UPDATED 1:15pm: The names of the two men who died crossing the notorious Manukau Bar have been released.
Police say they were Terangi Woonton and Kairangi Samuela.
The pair were with three fishing companions when their five metre aluminium boat was overturned by large waves as they crossed the bar.
All five were wearing life jackets.
The three survivors are being treated in hospital.Â
However, it's emerged that the boat had not lodged a call with Coastguard notifying the marine rescue service that it was about to navigate the dangerous harbour entrance.
It's not a legal requirement, but it's standard practice.
Police say people on a passing vessel members rescued the three survivors and recovered the two bodies.
