Auckland Art Gallery says it has been forced to close today due to “unexpected building issues”.
The gallery said in a statement online the gallery and cafe would be closed while the building had a safety assessment.
“The safety of the gallery’s collection, staff and visitors are our top priority, and we are taking precautionary measures to ensure the building is safe,” the statement said.
The gallery is being closed because of safety concerns, and an assessment is under way.
“We are actively assessing the situation and will provide updates on the gallery website and social media pages once we know more information.”
Margaret Young, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited acting director for the gallery, said a leaking pipe had been found on the second floor of the gallery.
Three Pride-related events which were scheduled to take place today have been postponed.
The gallery is also hosting a major exhibition by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, “Olafur Eliasson: Your Curious Journey”. Ticket holders for the exhibition could reschedule their visit or receive a refund.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to welcoming you back soon,” the gallery said.
The gallery had a modern $121 million redevelopment which was completed in 2011, and is currently replacing the roof of the 135 year-old heritage building at a cost of around $12m. The building issue was unrelated to that renovation work, Young said.
