Disappointing but not surprising.
Aucklanders are now one step closer to paying even more at the pumps after councillors voted in favour of the tax 13-7.
Legislation allowing the tax is expected to be passed in Parliament to allow it to come into effect on July the first.
AA spokesperson Barney Irvine says Aucklanders won't be happy about paying more at the pump but they'll do it anyway.
"I think most Aucklanders would look at this and say if it's gonna result in a better transport system then I'll be prepared to pay, albeit grudgingly."
Irvine says they still have big questions around it.
"Is it going to generate as much revenue as the council and the government think it's going to? Are fuel companies going to spread the cost nationally rather than just charging it in Auckland?'
He says the AA will be asking for a review of Auckland Council's regional fuel tax scheme once it's been up and running for a year.
