New claims against Te Kohanga Reo Trust

Fresh concerns have been raised about the financial management of Te Kohanga Reo National Trust.

Maori Television programme Native Affairs says it has found new evidence of questionable payments to former staff in 2007 and 2009.

It follows similar concerns raised by the programme two years ago.

Former board member Toni Waho was removed from the board last year after raising concerns about its spending and management decisions.

"When the board became aware of the at least one of those payments, we became aware too late and I certainly was not happy," Waho said.

The heads of Te Pataka Ohanga Limited, the subsidiary of Te Kohanga Reo, paid themselves bonuses including koha not approved by the board, and used credit cards to purchase personal items. It had also allowed board members to take personal loans

Education minister Hekia Parata told Native Affairs the accountability issues have been addressed with the appointment of a new chief executive.

Star journalist Mihingarangi Forbes quit the channel during a staff uproar over how the story was managed by Maori Television executives.
