Ngati Tuwharetoa has received 32 properties of cultural significance to the iwi in a $25 million Treaty settlement and an apology from the crown.

The settlement with New Zealand's fifth largest iwi includes $16.4 million cash, full ownership of Taurewa Station, a former Linz farm, and part ownership of the Karioi Crown Forestry lands.

Several high profile tourist attractions are also in the package including Huka Falls Reserve and the Tokaanu Hot Pools.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson said the Huka Falls facilities could do with improvement and he'd like to see the iwi get on with that.

"The Visitor Centre is very run down but there'll be no charging for people to go and look at the Huka Falls," he said.

"That's one of the old arguments that's always raised when I have a Treaty settlement, that somehow will be in charging people, but it's not right."

Mr Finlayson said Ngati Tuwharetoa was part of the the central North Island settlement that was negotiated when Sir Michael Cullen was Minister

"They received something in the region of $55 to $60 million - this part of the settlement was $25 million."
