Urgent action is being called for over the state of Christchurch's Princess Margaret Hospital.
A newly released review of the hospital's remaining mental health facilities reveals both staff and patients have serious concerns about them, calling them both 'disgusting' and 'depressing' with even the Canterbury District Health Board regarding them as sub-standard.
Labour MP David Clark said it's shocking reviewers refused to visit the hospital as part of their work, because of the state of its facilities.
"It is I think incumbent on people from Wellington to go and see what they're actually dealing with. Their squeamish-ness about visiting a facility that is past its use-by date is their own concern and shouldn't impact on the way they do their job."
Clark said the Government needs to stop stalling and accept Princess Margaret Hospital is no longer fit for purpose.
"The government has been very slow to get back to the Canterbury DHB when it's come forward with proposals. They've fought it at every point possible, and it just seems like there isn't the political will to do what needs to be done."
