A Christchurch couple say Immigration New Zealand has wrongly denied their extended family's visit to New Zealand.

Carlos and Stephanie Alegre are having a wedding celebration next weekend and are afraid their loved ones won't be able to make it due to an immigration hiccup.

Ms Alegre said Immigration New Zealand denied her husband's sister and family a visitor's visa over concerns the family may overstay.

Immigration cited that the family, despite being born in Peru, don't have any family or financial ties to their home country.

But Ms Alegre said that's not true - they have plenty of family in Peru, and are financially stable:

"It's just totally unfair. They've not made any effort to make any contact with us, and we've given them everything possibly that we could."

"It's just that we wanted to have our family with us to share our wedding day - that's it."
