State Highway 29 between Matamata and Tauranga is off limits to large vehicles because of the wind.

Traffic is being redirected at Lower Kaimai.

In Waikato, the wild weather lifted roofs off houses.

A spokesman for the fire services said they had received a lot of callouts related to today's storm.

"In the Waikato, predominantly in the Te Aroha area, there are several houses where there's been roofs lifted, tiles lifted off the roof," the spokesman said.

There had also been reports of trees and powerlines being blown down.
