Safety equipment theft an issue in search for missing teen

Frustration from Raglan locals as the search for a missing teenager continues.

A 17-year-old has been missing since just after midday yesterday after being swept from the rocks at a dangerous fishing spot.

People who know the Papanui Point area well are upset that safety equipment used to help people who get into trouble in the water isn't there when it's needed.

Raglan Sport Fishing Club Secretary Sheryl Hart says they've put a lot of safety equipment at the spot over the years, but it keeps going missing.

"We've put life rings and rope out there but it just gets ripped off to the point where we've decided to just leave it alone and what will be will be."

Hart says it's a deadly spot, and if people aren't fully aware of the dangers, they shouldn't go there.

"It's a tragedy basically, but it's one that happens all too often out there, that's the sad part of it."
