Police are still working to formally identify the pilot, whose helicopter plunged into the Marlborough Sounds.
The Robinson 44 hit power lines in French Pass on Friday.
Officers working on the investigation say they believe the pilot was Ian Simcox of Blenheim.
The 65-year-old owned the helicopter.
But they say he can't be formally named until an identification process is complete.
The Coroner has been notified of the death, and the Civil Aviation Authority is investigating.
