A man has been taken to hospital following a serious assault in the Northern town of Kaiwaka this morning.

Sergeant Shane Turner said police were looking for two people in relation to the incident.

"Two part-Maori males in their 40's, were known to the victim, who was assaulted outside La Nonna's Italian bakery in Kaiwaka about 7.45am," he said.

The men left the scene in a silver Honda.

The man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The injured man is the bakery's owner. He has facial and head injuries.
