Two children who sparked a major police search after they stole away from a Tuakau home in the dead of night are now believed to be safe with family.

Police launched a major operation a week ago to look for 15-year-old Te Morehu McLean and his 7-year-old sister, Anahera.

The young pair left their Potter Rd home in Tuakau at about 10pm last Monday.

Police appealed for information from the public to confirm their whereabouts after police suspected the pair had been picked up and driven away from near their caregiver's home.

Today a police spokeswoman said they had received information that suggested the children were safe with family members.

There were no immediate concerns for their safety.

She said inquiries were ongoing and police were working with other government agencies to ensure the care and welfare of the children.
