Investigations will continue today after a female tourist died when car plunged off a cliff and rolled into a lake near Twizel.

The crash happened just before 3pm on Saturday, near the intersection of Hayman Rd and Braemar Mount Cook Station Rd.

The woman was flung from the car and found dead at the scene.

The male driver was taken to hospital with broken bones.

Police are still trying to establish exactly what happened but believe the car lost control on the gravel road.

It then went off the cliff and rolled several times, before coming to rest and submerging in Lake Pukakai.
