UPDATED 11.47am: A gory scene at a Riccarton Caltex early this morning, when a man with a gunshot wound walked in asking for help.

Staff of the petrol station on the corner of Matipo Street and Blenheim Road then called an ambulance.

He was been admitted to Christchurch Hospital where he's in a stable condition.

The victim who's believed to be in his 30s, has had surgery and is understood to be able to talk. 

The shooting is thought to have occurred just before 5:30 am.

Police weren't aware of the shooting until they were alerted by the Hospital that a wounded man had been brought in .

They're still investigating and aren't releasing further details at this stage. 

Police will be speaking with the staff Riccarton Caltex.
