UPDATED 9.29am: The death of a man in a Christchurch playground isn't being treated as suspicious.

A member of the public found the 27-year-old's body around 7.40 this morning in the Goulding Ave playground, near Dressmart in Hornby.

Jessica McCarthy told Chris Lynch his body has now been removed

"We've had a hearse come to this park, they've taken the body and left again."

A tarpaulin has been laid out under the playground on Goulding Ave.

Numerous police are speaking quickly on their cell phones while they examine the scene.

The area has been cordoned off, but one car, a Nissan Primera, remains inside the cordon - it's unclear whether that's related.

Resident Rochelle Fortune said she saw a tarpaulin being rolled out.

"And it looked like a body was underneath, so it looks like they've covered the body with a tarpaulin, and also put a bit of a tent up around it."
