Police have resorted to firing shots at the tyres of a stolen 10 tonne truck in Te Aroha overnight, after road spikes failed to bring an end to a bizarre rampage.
A 54-year-old man is in custody, after the truck smashed into the front of Morrinsville Police Station, causing extensive damage.
Police tried to stop the truck on State Highway 26 near Te Aroha, but it drove directly at two patrol cars.
The truck was then observed driving around Te Aroha, with multiple cordons and road spikes put in place. The Eagle helicopter was also deployed.
Eventually, the truck - reported stolen shortly before midnight - was brought to a stop when two shots were fired into a front tyre.
Inspector Jeff Penno says it was a quickly evolving situation which was resolved without injury.
He praised police, saying they "demonstrated courage and initiative."
An investigation is underway and charges are likely.
