Otago Polytechnic's proposal to randomly drug test students is being welcomed by some.

It already tests students in courses where there are safety concerns, but is consulting with staff and students to make the testing more widespread.

Drug Detection Agency CEO Kirk Hardy told Mike Hosking it's a great idea that promotes safety.

"Anybody who smokes cannabis the night before can suffer what is called a cannabis or a weed hangover the next day."
