Hamilton's newest high school opens today, and students who live in the city's northern suburbs are excited.

Congestion is expected in the north of Hamilton today as close to one thousand students arrive for their first day.

Rototuna Junior High School is the first secondary school to open in the area, the Rototuna, Huntington and Flagstaff suburbs have rapidly grown in recent years.

A senior high school will open next year.

Student Andy Irvine said he's looking forward to going to a school so close to home, the closest alternative is in Fairfield which is an extra 20 minutes in the morning.

"I can bike to school which is good for me."

The Hamilton City Council is expecting a few teething problems as traffic flows change dramatically.

Network Manager Robin Denton said they'll have traffic wardens in the area and have put in a temporary path through to the high.

"At this stage we're just trying to have people there just keeping things flowing, it may be that we have to stop people going into some areas if they get really crowded."
