Police are making little headway investigating the armed heist of a banks' day's takings - and are now asking the public to help identify the gunman involved.

A lone man armed with a gun snatched the cash around 2.15 on Friday afternoon from two security officers who had just collected it from a nearby bank on the corner of Darby and Queen Streets in Auckland's CBD.

The gunman got away with a large amount of cash in a stolen vehicle, which was later recovered a short distance away.

Police have posted a picture of a man in a hoodie and want to hear from anyone who can identify him.

They say that may assist the investigation team.
