Escaped convict Phillip Smith could fight extradition from Brazil.

He skipped the country at the beginning of the month, but now Brazilian authorities want him back here as soon as possible.

Smith's New Zealand lawyer, Tony Ellis, says his team has now found a Brazilian lawyer with extradition experience.

He says the lawyer isn't formally hired yet, but the only thing holding them back is how to pay him.
