UPDATED 11.01am A woman is dead and a man is charged with her murder following an incident in Opotiki last night.

Police attended an address on Wellington Street at 10:13pm with witnesses reporting up to 12 police cars at the address last night and this morning.

Police say they were called to the address following reports of a domestic dispute.

Police said they performed CPR on a woman at the address but could not save her.

A homicide investigation has been launched.

A 35-year-old man was due to appear in Whakatane District Court today charged with murder.

It is believed the homicide has a connection to a local gang.

Police said a vicious machete attack on a man last night in Opotiki was not connected to the death.

Last night a 39-year-old man was flown by helicopter to hospital with serious leg and arm injuries after he was attacked by a group of men with a machete and steel pipe.
