A 54-year-old man has been charged following a bizarre rampage in Te Aroha and Morrinsville overnight.

The man stole a 10 tonne truck in Te Aroha around midnight, forcing police to fire shots at the tyres after road spikes failed to stop the vehicle.

The truck later smashed into the front of Morrinsville Police Station, causing extensive damage.

Police say the man has been charged with unlawful conversion of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for Police, resisting olice, intentional damage, assault with a weapon, reckless driving and attempted arson of a vehicle.

Nobody else is being sought in relation to these incidents, and Police are reassuring locals their services will not be impacted by the damage to the station.

"This was outstanding work in a fast changing situation," Inspector Julia Lynch said.

The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow morning.
