UPDATED 12.17pm: Underlying tensions between two groups are thought to have sparked the shooting in Lower Hutt this morning.
Police continue to investigate the shooting on Reynolds Street in Taita - that left a man with serious injuries.
He's undergoing surgery, and is in a stable condition in hospital.
Police say based on the information they've got, they don't think there's any ongoing risk to the public.
They're appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious leading up to the shooting an midnight last night, to come forward.Â
Newstalk ZB reporter Nick Walker was outside the house this morning, where a scene guard was in place.
"The house itself is an old brick house. It looks as though there are two flats in the house, and it's just one house divided through the middle. The cordon goes up in the middle of the lawn," Walker said.
"There's no obvious signs that there's been any disturbance overnight from looking outside. There's no broken glass, the rubbish is out as it would ordinarily be, but other than that you wouldn't really know that anything else is going on."
Walker said there's an armed policeman standing guard with outside the back of the house with a rifle, "there's also a boxer dog that looks like it belongs in the house and it's standing guard also."
He reports there's a burnt out shell of a car that's upside down in a carpark to the rear of the house in question.Â
