A jury is now weighing up whether there is enough evidence to convict a Christchurch baby-sitter facing a murder charge

Shayal Sami claims baby Aaliyah Chand fell from a couch while in her care in 2015.

Chand was injured while Sami was baby sitting her on January 6th 2015. Chand suffered two skull fractures and later died in hospital.

The Crown alleges the 21-year-old inflicted the fatal injuries.

The jury, in the High Court at Christchurch, retired on Friday morning

Justice Rachel Dunningham called the jury back - only half-an-hour into its deliberations - to clarify matters raised by the defence.

She told them their only job was to come up with a verdict..

"So I want to make it clear that whether your verdict is guilty or not guilt, you are not to worry about the consequences of that when looking objectively at the evidence."

That verdict could be guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter, or not guilty.

The trial has been ongoing since the 30th of October.
