A Hastings taxi driver has been ambushed and assaulted by a mob of youths.

The driver was on McLeod Street on Sunday afternoon, when seven boys aged between 10 and 17 asked for a ride.

He had his phone stolen and was king hit in the side of the head when he refused the money-less group.

The driver, who wants to remain anonymous, said it took him by surprise and certainly hurt.

A passer-by witnessed the assault, and took pictures of the group for the police.
