The man arrested over the armed stand-off in Palmerston North has appeared in court this morning.

Caleb Peter Kovaleski, 25, is facing four new charges over the incident. They are using a firearm against a police officer, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop for police.

Kovaleski is also charged with breaching bail on June 23, and stealing a Ford Courier Ute from Fielding on May 20.

He made a brief appearance in Palmerston North District Court this morning where he was represented by court-appointed counsel Penelope Walker.

She did not oppose media applications and consented to Kovaleski being remanded in custody until his next appearance on July 21.

Kovaleski wore a hooded sweatshirt and T-shirt and kept his arms folded throughout his appearance before a Justice of the Peace.

He looked into the public gallery in court where his grandparents were seated.

Kovaleski surrendered peacefully to police yesterday after a nearly two day stand-off with police.

The entire Palmerston North suburb of Cloverlea was in lockdown, but cordons were lifted after his arrest last night.

Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith is relieved it all ended without issue.

"Some hadn't been home for two days and they were worried about things like pets, where they were going to sleep for the night and some medication issues," he said.

A second night of the cordon would have been hard for everyone involved, "not only on police dealing with the issue, but also the residents of Cloverlea and the couple of hundred people that couldn't get back into their houses."
