A taxi driver has suffered critical injuries in a suspected stabbing last night where he went and sought help from staff at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said the driver arrived at a fast food restaurant on Memorial Avenue near the airport to seek help “after being stabbed several times”.

It’s understood that staff at McDonald’s sought to help the man before emergency services arrived.

Baillie said he suffered critical injuries but is now in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

About 15 minutes after police were called, the alleged offender was taken into custody at a nearby hotel.

“Cordons were in place overnight and enquiries into the incident are ongoing,” Baillie said.

“Police will have an ongoing presence in the area today while a scene examination is carried out, but we do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public and are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.”

A 46-year-old Auckland woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

A St John spokesperson said they sent one ambulance, one rapid response unit and one manager to the scene.

Photographs from the scene show emergency services treating a patient. Another shows a man with blood on his body being carried from the restaurant on a stretcher.

Multiple ambulances including airport fire services and Westpac rescue descended on the restaurant, a witness told the Herald.

“McDonald’s workers were helping with the injured person. The victim has now been transported to hospital ambulance.

“Police have now cordoned off the McDonald’s and are speaking to people inside the restaurant.”

The witness said the injured man was carried out on a stretcher “covered in blood”.

Police are now asking for witnesses.
