Content warning: Sexual assault

Police are appealing for information after a stranger offered to walk a child home before sexually assaulting her in bushes near Aronia Park in South Auckland.

Police said the child was playing in the park when they were approached by an unknown man who offered to walk her home about 8pm on Friday.

“This man has then indecently assaulted her in nearby bushes. The child has screamed for help, and the man fled the scene.”

A neighbour called police who responded immediately but were unable to locate the man.

The victim is being cared for by their family and supported by olice.

Police said they want to hear from several people who were in Aronia Park, which is on the corner of Everglade Dr and Aronia Way at the time of the assault.

“We would also like to hear from any residents in the wider park area who may have CCTV cameras on their property that cover Aronia Way, Everglade Dr, Keri Anne Pl and Correa Court.

“If you have footage or information that could help our enquiries, please update us online now or call 105. Please reference job number 241025/7415.”

Police would also like to hear from anyone driving in that area at around between 6pm and 8pm with recorded dash cam footage.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Manurewa Local Board chairman Matt Winiata told the Herald the local board had a focus on CCTV in more public spaces to promote safety but lacked the budget to follow through.

“We will work with our parks team and police to look at areas around the playground to keep open and retain more lines of sight but there are many paths and walkways connecting streets through this area of Totara Heights which are enclosed by bush,” he said.

“We will do what we can to assist police and the local school with sharing the message of safety in public spaces, within bushy walkways and stranger danger.

“Our hearts go out to this young girl and her family.”
