Wellington Police say the fatal stabbing of a man in the Porirua suburb of Cannons Creek is a tragedy.

A 37 year old man was rushed to Wellington Hospital in an ambulance after the incident around 11pm last night, but died early this morning.

A 26 year old woman from Porirua has been charged with murder.

The pair lived at the same Bedford Street house and were known to each other.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee says it's a family violence incident turned tragic.

"There were children at the address and it's tragic for them. Obviously there is a father there, and he's the son of people in the community as well."
