Cunxiu Tian died after being viciously attacked and struck multiple times around the head and face in her own home.
Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small asked Te Atatu residents to contact police if they've seen anything out of the ordinary and should examine their own properties in some detail, including checking for "any footprints, any dirt, or anything untoward at the exterior of your property."
Members of the public can contact the Henderson Police directly, or 0800 CRIMESTOPPERS.
Age Concern Chief Executive Robyn Scott pointed out that crimes like this tend to make older people anxious and worried about their personal safety.
"Every time an older person is attacked in any form of violent crime, this has ramifications for all older people in New Zealand, particularly those who are living on their own and may feel more vulnerable," Scott said.
"Older people don't necessarily need to feel that because there's been a crime like this that there's any kind of crime wave going on."
"Clearly there's always sensible precautions that all people including older people can take to be safe in their homes."
