An elderly couple is in hospital after a serious assault on the Kapiti Coast last night.

Police are asking for the public to assist them in finding out who carried out the attack in He Awa Street in Waikanae.

Those responsible also stole the couple's car - a green 1999 Honda Accord - registration YP4339.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ferguson says it's a concerning attack, and it doesn't get much worse.

He's asking anyone who saw the car or noted anything suspicious in the area to contact police.
