An Armed Offenders Squad member has shot a pit bull after it attacked a police dog in Wainuiomata last night.

Police noticed a patched Rebel Motorcycle gang member speeding past an address around 8.15.

They started a short pursuit, which was quickly abandoned.

A police dog helped track the person to a nearby address, where a pit bull was set upon it.

The pit bull was shot and taken to a vet, where it later died, while the police dog suffered minor injuries.

Police are yet to speak to the man on the motorbike, as well as a man at the address where the altercation took place.
