All frontline police are now carrying guns in Christchurch after a shootout on Tuesday.
A 33-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after being shot by police in a Richmond firefight.
Canterbury District Commander John Price says all frontline officers will be carrying firearms until further notice.
He says the decision will be reviewed each shift.
Price says it wasn't a decision they made lightly, but it's necessary for the safety of both police and the public.
They are still looking for information in relation to an incident in Wainonoi on Saturday morning. It is believed the same man shot on Tuesday night shot at a police car during a pursuit.Â
