A Christchurch community board is applauding a change to allow residents to object to quarrying near homes.

Residents living next to the quarry hope a district plan change will allow them to stop it developing any further.

Residents along Robert Road were furious after Fulton Hogan was granted consent to quarry directly behind the residential area.

The council has recommended a change to the plan which would allow residents to object to any quarry activity within 500 metres of homes.

Riccarton Wigram community board chair Mike Mora points out Fulton Hogan were looking at escalating the work.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get that system in place prior to another application being granted to quarry closer."

Mora acknowledges it's been causing a lot of stress for residents.

"One of the main effects of that is a very, very fine dust and silica that's in that dust, so we've got to be very, very cautious now that they're protected as much as we possibly can."
