Ambulances go back in time

St John Canterbury kicked-off its annual appeal yesterday with a trip back in time.

The organisation hopes to raise $2.4 million this year to buy 12 fully equipped new ambulances.

Spokesman Ian Henderson says as part of the drive, two vintage ambulances from 1940 and 1970 were on display inside the Transitional Cathedral.

"We have a huge range of people from young kids who were completely enthralled by what were old vehicles to them, to older people who actually remember those vehicles from when they were younger."

He says they money will be used to buy more ambulances, and the generosity shown by Cantabrians is always hugely appreciated.

"St John needs to fundraise for those resources, and medical equipment like that."

The ambulances will be leading a 'mini-convoy' through the city on Friday for donations.
