The trucking sector says consumers will be the biggest losers from the latest rise in road user charges.
The 36 percent discount to road user charges, introduced by the Government last April, will be removed from midnight tonight.
And the fuel tax subsidy, also introduced by the Government last year, will be phased out at the end of next month.
Transporting New Zealand Chief Executive Nick Leggett says removing the subsidies will push up freight costs, which will in turn push up prices for everyday essentials.
He says the cost of a large truck travelling 100,000 kilometres will go up by about $20,000.
