Auckland's mayor has called for an urgent meeting to discuss Ports of Auckland's wharf expansion plans.

Len Brown has sent a letter to his councillors acknowledging their concerns over the proposed extension of Bledisloe wharf before the Port Future Study has been completed.

He's also told the Ports of Auckland a formal response to these concerns is expected by the start of next week.

Len Brown says the meeting planned for Tuesday will be held so that councillors will be able to consider all the available options before responding to the port company.

He's calling for calm heads as council works towards a robust and enduring solution.

The chairman of the Ports of Auckland is unrepentant over the company going ahead with the wharf extension despite the council asking for the project to be put on hold.

Graeme Hawkins has publicly stated he would resign rather than stop the plans going ahead.

Michael Goldwater from Stop Stealing Our Harbour spoke to Larry Williams about the plans.
