Tongan leaders have denied the police response to out-of-control rugby league fans in south Auckland was over-the-top.
More than 50 revelers were arrested in Otahuhu, after missiles were thrown at police and fireworks were let off near a petrol station.
Officers say the behaviour is unacceptable.
But some fans have said police overreacted to people who were just having fun celebrating the huge win.
They say the picture that has been painted is much worse than the reality, with most people doing the right thing.
Tongan Advisory Council member, Melino Maka says police are meant to keep the public safe - and that's what they did.
"We had meetings with the police two weeks ago and the police briefed us on their operation and we gave the undertaking we'd support them and make sure they'd keep the peace so the public can go on doing their things."
He said that people do not get arrested for no reason.
"Some of the fans need to control themselves because the police, they have a task to keep the peace. There is nothing wrong with celebrating if you win but you also need to understand that you don't want to interrupt ordinary citizens going about their business," Maka said.
