One of Auckland's most lambasted waterways is being celebrated today.
The Tamaki River estuary has long been criticised for poor water quality, high boat traffic and its industrial surrounds.
But some people like it, and they're behind the first annual Tamaki River Festival today at Bramley Drive Reserve.
Adele White of the Howick Local Board says it's about engaging the local community, and celebrating the estuary.
Highlights will include water walker zorbs, a spit roast, and a flare demonstration by the local Coastguard.
