A group of north Rodney residents are calling for the region to break away from the rest of the region.
The Northern Action Group say it's time they were allowed to breakaway from the rest of Auckland, and they have a report to prove it is a viable option.
The report was based on three similar-sized councils - Tasman, Marlborough and Gisborne - and gives 12 different financial scenarios
Chairman Bill Townson said the report shows the council could achieve between a $5 million surplus and a $5.5 million deficit.
"If you take the average of all those [12 reports], which is all you can really do, it shows that the North Rodney Council would not only be viable but would show a nice, comfortable surplus."
He said Rodney is a rural area and doesn't want to be ruled by an urban-focussed administration.
"And we feel also that we have lost our idendity. We are too far away from the city, and it's becoming increasingly evident that we are being used as a cash cow, as our roads are being let go."
Townson said that surplus could be used to repair roads or reduce rates or both.
He said the Local Government Commission will be giving its preferred options at a meeting in Warkworth on November 30th.
