A person has drowned near Muriwai beach, west of Auckland.

Police received reports a person was in trouble in the waters at Maori Bay about 3.30pm on Friday.

They were found dead in the water when emergency services arrived, a police spokeswoman said.

An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene, a spokesman said.

Police remain at the scene talking to witnesses.
