A major step forward today for those behind the restoration of Auckland's iconic St James Theatre.
For the first time in almost a decade Aucklanders will be able to get a glimpse inside the historic building, with a cafe opening in the foyer.
Auckland Notable Properties Trust principal trustee Steve Bielby says they're thrilled.
"It's been sort-of the culmination of the best part of six months work now to get the foyer ready for the cafe opening and later on in the weekend for the opening of the stalls area."
The building was closed in 2007 after a fire raised concerns about safety and compliance.
"This is the first time we've had people through for eight years and hopefully in a couple of years, we can throw another opening party for a fully restored St James Theatre."
The venue will also host its first public music event this Saturday.
